Elastomer Sheets & Custom Gaskets
Guide to elastomer sheet rubber materials, die-cut and waterjet-cut custom gaskets, material options, thickness ranges, and applications for industrial sealing and insulation.
Introduction to Elastomer Sheets and Custom Gaskets
Elastomer sheet materials and custom-cut gaskets are fundamental sealing products used across every industry where flat surfaces must be sealed against fluid or gas leakage. From simple pipe flange gaskets to complex multi-port manifold seals, sheet rubber and custom gaskets provide versatile sealing solutions that can be tailored to virtually any shape, size, and material requirement. Unlike molded O-rings and precision seals, sheet gaskets can be produced quickly and economically in any geometry, making them the go-to solution for non-standard sealing applications, equipment repair, and prototype development.
The range of available sheet rubber materials spans the full spectrum of elastomer chemistry, from economical general-purpose rubber to high-performance fluoroelastomers and specialty compounds. Understanding the properties of different sheet materials and the manufacturing methods used to produce custom gaskets enables engineers and maintenance professionals to specify the most effective and cost-efficient sealing solution for any application.
Sheet Rubber Materials
Natural Rubber (NR) Sheets
Natural rubber sheets offer excellent resilience, tear strength, and abrasion resistance at an economical price point. They are commonly used for general-purpose gaskets, bumpers, vibration dampening pads, and lining applications. Natural rubber provides good resistance to water, dilute acids, and alcohols but is not suitable for petroleum-based fluids or prolonged outdoor exposure. Temperature range is typically -30 to +80 degrees Celsius.
Neoprene (CR) Sheets
Neoprene sheet rubber provides a good balance of oil resistance, weather resistance, and mechanical properties. It is widely used for gaskets in HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, and general industrial applications where moderate oil and weather exposure is expected. Neoprene offers flame-retardant properties and moderate temperature resistance from -30 to +110 degrees Celsius.
EPDM Sheets
EPDM sheet rubber is the preferred material for water, steam, and outdoor weathering applications. Its exceptional ozone and UV resistance provides long service life in exposed environments. EPDM gaskets are standard for water treatment equipment, HVAC ducting, roofing, and outdoor enclosure sealing. Temperature range of -50 to +150 degrees Celsius. FDA-compliant grades are available for food and beverage applications.
NBR (Nitrile) Sheets
Nitrile sheet rubber provides excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, fuels, and greases, making it the standard material for gaskets in automotive, hydraulic, and fuel handling applications. NBR sheets are available in a wide range of hardnesses from 40 to 90 Shore A and provide good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. Temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees Celsius.
Silicone Sheets
Silicone sheet rubber offers the widest temperature range of any common sheet material (-60 to +230 degrees Celsius) and is the preferred choice for food-grade gaskets, medical equipment seals, and high-temperature applications. Silicone sheets are available in FDA-compliant grades and provide excellent compression set resistance for long-term static sealing.
FKM (Viton) Sheets
FKM sheet rubber provides superior chemical resistance and high-temperature performance for demanding gasket applications involving aggressive chemicals, solvents, and fuels. FKM sheets are specified for chemical processing equipment, fuel system gaskets, and applications requiring temperature resistance to 200 degrees Celsius.
Sheet Specifications and Formats
Elastomer sheets are available in a variety of formats and specifications to suit different application requirements:
- Thickness range: From 0.5mm to 50mm, with standard thicknesses at 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 25mm
- Standard sheet sizes: 1000mm x 1000mm, 1200mm x 1200mm, 1000mm x 10m rolls, and wider rolls for production applications
- Surface finishes: Smooth (fabric impression one side), smooth both sides, or textured for specific grip requirements
- Reinforcement: Fabric-reinforced (nylon, polyester) sheets available for enhanced tensile strength and tear resistance
- Insertion: Metal mesh or wire-reinforced sheets for high-pressure gasket applications
- Hardness: Ranging from 40 Shore A (soft, conformable) to 80 Shore A (firm, extrusion-resistant)
Custom Gasket Manufacturing Methods
Die Cutting
Die cutting is the most common method for producing custom gaskets from sheet rubber. Steel rule dies or matched metal dies are used to stamp gasket shapes from sheet material in a press. Die cutting is ideal for medium to high-volume production runs where the die tooling cost is justified by the per-piece savings. Simple shapes can use standard steel rule dies that are relatively inexpensive to produce, while complex geometries may require precision-machined dies.
Waterjet Cutting
Waterjet cutting uses a high-pressure water stream (with or without abrasive) to cut gasket shapes from sheet material with high precision and no tooling cost. Waterjet cutting is ideal for prototypes, low-volume production, and complex geometries that would require expensive dies. Edge quality is excellent, with no heat-affected zone or material distortion. Waterjet cutting can handle sheet thicknesses from 0.5mm to 100mm+ with tolerances of plus or minus 0.1mm.
Laser Cutting
Laser cutting provides high-speed, precision cutting of thin elastomer sheets with minimal material waste. CO2 lasers are commonly used for rubber cutting, providing clean edges and the ability to cut complex shapes with fine detail. Laser cutting is limited to thinner materials (typically under 10mm) and may produce a heat-affected zone at the cut edge.
Hand Cutting
For one-off gaskets and field repairs, hand cutting from sheet stock using templates, compasses, and cutting tools remains a viable and immediate solution. While lacking the precision of machine cutting methods, hand-cut gaskets can be produced on-site from sheet stock to get equipment back into service quickly.
Gasket Design Considerations
Effective gasket design requires consideration of several factors including the flange surface finish, bolt loading, operating pressure, and temperature. The gasket material must be soft enough to conform to surface irregularities but firm enough to resist extrusion under operating pressure. Gasket thickness should be the minimum needed to accommodate surface finish and flange distortion, as thicker gaskets generally have higher creep rates and lower blowout resistance. Bolt hole patterns and gasket inner dimensions must ensure adequate sealing surface while maintaining proper bolt loading distribution.
