A backup ring is a rigid ring that holds an elastomeric seal in its designed shape and keeps it in the correct position. Backup rings are not seals by themselves, but they are commonly used in combination with O-rings, lip seals, and dynamic shaft seals. They prevent seals from escaping through gaps when pressure is applied. In many cases, it is recommended to use two back-up rings installed above and below the sealing ring for additional protection.
Backup rings are manufactured in either a solid or spiral design (with an overlap like a coil). The spiral design allows the overlapping rings to create varying levels of contact, thereby providing extra support.
